Vienna Motor Symposium 2008: BlueTDI Development Completed Successfully
BlueTDI will debut midyear in North America The U.S. version of the Jetta will be the first to use BlueTDI
Wolfsburg, April 24, 2008
At the International Vienna Motor Symposium (24-25 April), Volkswagen is to introduce the production version of the BlueTDI, a next-generation turbo diesel developed especially for the North American market. The common rail engine is based on the high-tech TDI, which was first introduced in Europe in 2007 with the Tiguan. This engine already satisfies the Euro-5 standard that comes into effect in autumn 2009. In order to meet specific operating conditions in the U.S., this four-cylinder engine was redeveloped with internal engine modifications and a NOx trap.
Background information: Five U.S. states1, including California, currently have the strictest emissions standards in the world (BIN5/LEV2). In spite of variations in fuel quality, which are more dramatic in the U.S. than in Europe, the new BlueTDI meets these emissions standards. The engine will debut in the U.S. Jetta this summer. For years, the Limousine has been the most popular and successful European-manufactured car on the American market, especially as a diesel.
The Jetta BlueTDI will debut as one of the cleanest and most economic cars of its class in the world. In the run-up to the Vienna Motor
Symposium, Dr. Ing. Jens Hadler, Director of Volkswagen Powertrain Development comments, "high fuel prices and a dramatic change in
environmental consciousness means that diesel is becoming more and more attractive for American drivers every day." Dr. Hadler continues,
remarking, "this is why many customers, especially in California, have been waiting for a super-clean diesel like our BlueTDI. I think this motor
will help the diesel get its big break in America because it consumes so little and yet can go such long distances on a single fill-up. And in a
country as big as the United States, this is a priceless advantage. On the highway, for example, this engine can reach up to 60 miles per gallon2. This is an improvement of 12 percent over its predecessor, which had a lower capacity and higher emissions".
A key aspect in the development of the BlueTDI (2.0 litre engine displacement, 103 kW/ 140 PS, 320 Nm) was the reduction of nitrogen
oxide emissions (NOx); the American BIN5/ LEV2 standards stipulate a nitrogen oxide limit of only 0.05 g/mile. The engineers in Wolfsburg met
this limit and the general reduction of raw emissions by using internal engine modifications, some of which are unique worldwide, and
implementing the maintenance-free NOx trap.
These internal engine changes include modifications to the design of the injection system of both the American and European TDI as well as the implementation of cylinder pressure sensors. This allows for a completely new type of cylinder pressure-based combustion control, which is both faster and tailored to each specific cylinder. Also new on-board: an optimised high-pressure injection pump. Another unique feature is the combination of a high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation system with additional low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation. This dual exhaust gas recirculation (dual circuit EGR) is an effective means of reducing nitrogen oxides in the engine. The dual circuit EGR system alone reduces NOx by up to 60 percent.
Outside of the engine, it is the NOx trap - connected downstream of the oxidation catalytic converter and the particle filter - that reduces nitrogen oxide to an absolute minimum. Implemented together, these measures reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 90 percent. Drive the Jetta BlueTDI and you will be driving one of the most economical and environmentallyfriendly cars in America.
1) = BIN5 states: California, Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Vermont.
2) = MPG (miles per gallon) is the standard range specification in the U.S. for
describing fuel consumption.

New Tektronix Oscilloscopes Ideal for Embedded Systems Designers
DPO3000 Offers Performance, Ease of Use, Serial Debug, and Compelling Value
Beaverton, Ore., April 23, 2008
Tektronix, Inc., a leading worldwide provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, announced the availability of the DPO3000 Digital Phosphor Oscilloscopes (DPOs) www.tek.com/scopes, a portable series of models that extends the advantages first introduced with the award-winning DPO/ MSO 4000 series. The new DPO3000 provides triggering and decode support for the most popular serial buses used in embedded design applications. Additionally, the new oscilloscopes offer 5M standard record length and utilize the popular Wave Inspector™ navigation and search controls to simplify finding events of interest. The new portable DPO3000 simplifies debug and sets new standards for performance, value, and ease-of-use.
Virtually every electronic product designed and produced today is an embedded system and may contain microprocessors, microcontrollers, DSPs, RAM, flash, EPROM's, FPGAs, A/Ds, D/As, and other I/O. Increasingly, embedded system designs are replacing internal parallel buses with serial buses such as I2C, SPI, and CAN. On a serial bus, a single signal may include address, control, data, and clock information; the complexity presents significant debug challenges for design engineers. The DPO3000 Series addresses these problems with the most complete set of tools for working with industry standard serial buses such as I2C, SPI, RS-232/422/485/UART, CAN and LIN.
"Through innovative features such as Wave Inspector and comprehensive support for the serial data standards most often used in embedded designs, the DPO3000 family of oscilloscopes will meet the pressing debug needs of design engineers," said Bob Bluhm, vice president and general manager, Value Scope Product Line, Tektronix. "With many best-in-class features, the DPO3000 is ideal for engineers needing to more quickly and efficiently find elusive design problems and stay on their product development schedule".
Wave Inspector Quickly Locates Difficult to Find Problems
Longer records are necessary for capturing meaningful serial data with high resolution, and allow engineers to spend less time adjusting triggers. In response, the DPO3000 provides 5M deep memory as standard. However, long records often represent thousands of screens worth of signal activity, making it challenging to quickly find information specific to a design problem. The DPO3000 Series Wave Inspector makes simple and efficient work of extracting needed answers.
Wave Inspector provides a dedicated, two-tier front panel knob for intuitive control of zooming and panning. A play/ pause feature with adjustable speed enables customers to automatically scroll the waveform across the screen while they look for the event of interest. Wave Inspector also provides the ability to search through an acquisition and automatically mark all occurrences of user-specified events, and navigate between them effortlessly. With Wave Inspector, the DPO3000 provides easy-to-use tools to quickly find and solve difficult problems.
Most Capable Portable Oscilloscope
The DPO3000 oscilloscope family consists of six models, ranging from 100 MHz to 500 MHz. All models provide 2.5 GS/ s sampling with >5x oversampling on all channels. 5M record length is standard on all channels enabling the capture of long time windows of signal activity with very high resolution.
Not only is the DPO3000 the most capable professional oscilloscope in its segment of the market, at only 5.4 inches deep, it is also the shallowest -- requiring less bench space than competing products -- and weighs only nine pounds for enhanced portability. The DPO3000 also provides exceptional value with Wave Inspector, serial triggering, protocol decode, USB plug-and-play PC connectivity, a 9" WVGA display to show more detail in the horizontal axis to better see glitches and fine details that otherwise might be missed, and the smallest footprint in its class.
The new models also offer a USB host (thumb drive) on the front panel enabling easy transfer of screenshots, setups and waveform data to a PC. All models include Ethernet and a USB device (TMC) port on the rear of the instrument that enables plug-and-play PC connectivity. Additionally, all models provide the TekVPI™ probe interface that fosters communication between the DPO3000 and TekVPI probes. A variety of TekVPI voltage and current probes are available. The DPO3VID Video Application Module adds a comprehensive set of HDTV and custom video triggers. This module combined with built-in, selectable 75W termination make the DPO3000 a great instrument for designs that incorporate modern video standards. No other similar instrument provides both HDTV triggering and built-in 75W termination.
"The new DPO3000 is very close to an ideal instrument, offering ease of use, robust functionality, a great widescreen display, and is easy on the wallet," said Richard Lilley, Sr. Engineering Manager Signal Processing, Harris Corporation-GCSD. "With its serial data triggering and decode support plus Wave Inspector for easily finding information in long records, the DPO3000 is ideal for embedded systems engineers that need to troubleshoot mixed-signal design problems and validate device performance".
Pricing and Availability
The new DPO3000 complements the recently introduced DPO4000 and MSO4000 Series, ranging from 100 MHz to 1 GHz bandwidths and providing the most complete and capable portable oscilloscope offering in the market for embedded systems engineers. U.S. list prices range from $4,450 for a two-channel DPO3012 to $10,900 for a four-channel DPO3054. All DPO3000 models are available for purchase and delivery.
NI LabVIEW SignalExpress Tektronix Edition LE base version is included free of charge with the DPO3000 Series; users can upgrade to the NI LabVIEW SignalExpress Tektronix Edition for a U.S. MSRP of $699 which includes more than 200 measurement acquisition, analysis, and reporting features for use with the DPO3000. The Tektronix Edition software can be ordered from Tektronix as option SIGEXPTE.

- BCIL, leader in creating urban eco-friendly homes, will conduct similar surveys every quarter, on various conservation related issues
Bangalore, India, April 21, 2008
Residents of Bangalore overwhelmingly support conserving water, but actually do very little to save water! This is just one of the key findings from the first in the series of surveys titled 'BCIL ECO-PULSE', conducted by Biodiversity Conservation [India] Limited (BCIL), a pioneer in alternate technologies, dedicated to urban eco-habitats creation. The survey, aimed at understanding the behavioral pattern and attitude towards Water Conservation was conducted among 400 respondents in Bangalore in the age group of 21 to 50 years. 60% of those surveyed were Graduates or Post-Graduates with household income levels of more than Rs.20,000 per month.
28% of the respondents felt that individual efforts at conserving water were of no use. While a large number of respondents seemingly understand the importance of water conservation, there is very little that they actually do towards water conservation! For Example, out of all those who stated that individual efforts could make a difference, a whopping 85% do not reuse water at all!
Mr. Chandrashekar Hariharan, CEO, BCIL, said, "The findings are not an exception to Bangalore's citizens alone. Demand for water is inelastic. It is difficult for people to adopt measures which will reflect a drop in water use. What is important is to not look for restraints from water-users, as much as for urban planning experts in Government and the building industry to devise measures that can reduce use of fresh water while enhancing systems for water reuse".
"There are many techniques and tools that can help conserve water: low-flow showers and taps at homes, swimming pools that avoid evaporation and therefore replenishments, and so on. There are, of course, simple things you can do at home like avoiding running water while shaving or washing; being conscious of the water we use for washing vessels; if we can use our washing machines only once or twice a week; if we can fix dripping taps and leaking lines...", Mr. Hariharan added.
The survey reveals that 64% of the respondents in Bangalore spend more than Rs.200 on water every month, with 12% spending in excess of Rs.500. A major share of the water usage goes for basic chores like washing clothes, bathing, washing utensils, toilet-flushing and mopping.
Though only 25% of the respondents have said that they use the shower to take bath 89% of them use the shower for more than 10 minutes. 51% of them actually claim to use the shower for more than 20 minutes. The survey reveals that washing clothes is the biggest water user in most of the respondent households. The results show that out of the 222 respondents who use the washing machine 48% wash with the washing machine filled only to half-capacity and 12% use the machine to wash even 2-3 clothes.
24% of the respondents tend to spend more water during summer, Another example of respondents whose action does not compliment their words, is found in the fact that 18% of those who say their efforts help solve the city's water crisis actually spend more water during summer! And more than half, 53%, continue to use the same amount of water during summer also.
The BCIL survey also showed that there are people in our city who care for these things; 15% of the respondents said they reuse water, and 23% consciously reduce usage of water during summer. 58% of those surveyed depend solely on BWSSB for their water while 29% get water from both BWSSB and borewells. 10% of the respondents depend solely on borewells for water supply.
"It is a known fact that Cauvery water feeds less than one-third of the entire need of the city. 70% of the need is met from out of groundwater resources with borewells accounting for nearly 15% of the city's demand. The Groundwater table in Bangalore has dramatically depleted - from about 200 feet in 1980 to nearly 700 feet in certain parts like Hoskote." Mr. Hariharan remarked. "The good news is, with some very simple harvesting systems that can re-charge open wells in your homes or apartment blocks, you can achieve self-sufficiency in most cases with little reliance on deep borewells or on the Municipal water supply," he said. "It is only natural that citizens perceive restrictions on water use to be an intrusion into their personal lifestyles. We need to change the way we think about water. Water is not about water in itself, as they say, it is about water management".
This is the first of the series of surveys which is to be conducted by BCIL to reveal less known facts/ insights/ alarming facts about Bangalore and its citizens. The forthcoming surveys in the 'BCIL ECO-PULSE' series will focus on Energy Conservation, Waste Management, Air Quality, etc., all of which, are causes that BCIL is crusading for, by building homes that are Water and Energy Positive, while being sensitive to most conservation related parameters.
The complete set of findings of 'BCILECO-PULSE', is available on request. Click here.

Riverbed Releases results of Semi-Annual Customer Survey
Bangalore, India, April 15, 2008
Riverbed Technology (Nasdaq: RVBD), the technology and market leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today the results of its semi-annual customer survey conducted in March 2008. King Research, an independent marketing research firm serving technology companies for over thirteen years, conducted field research and provided analysis for the semi-annual customer survey. For the latest spring '08 survey, 828 customers and resellers responded across five continents, representing 506 organizations of every size. According to the results, customer satisfaction with Riverbed® products, technical support and professional services exceeds the industry norm. With more than 87% of the respondents saying that they would recommend Riverbed products and services, the survey results show that Riverbed and its products deliver as promised.
The semi-annual survey of Riverbed customers takes an objective look at customer satisfaction with Riverbed products, technical support and professional services. It also looks at the applications Riverbed customers are accelerating with Riverbed Steelhead® products, as well as customer purchase motivations, other vendors considered in the purchase process and why customers chose Riverbed over the competition.
Of the respondents who evaluated alternatives, 40% chose Riverbed Steelhead appliances over Cisco's WAAS offerings, and 23% selected Riverbed Steelhead appliances over Juniper's WX or WXC appliances. Most interesting is that 31% of all survey respondents selected Riverbed without looking at another WDS vendor, showing both the strength of the Riverbed market lead and that the market for WDS is in its early stages. Riverbed is well-known in the marketplace as the only vendor to provide a best-of-breed, integrated WDS solution that accelerates applications and data for remote offices, data centers and mobile workers across wide area networks (WANs), accelerating access to applications and data up to 100 times faster.
Customer satisfaction: It is all about going faster
Over 87% of the respondents gave Riverbed an overall company rating of eight or higher on a scale of 1-10, while a full 39% of respondents gave Riverbed a perfect score of 10 out of 10. Product performance, hardware and software quality and management capabilities were all highly rated, with application performance peaking at 8.75 out of 10. The Riverbed technical support team also received exceptional scores, with expertise of support engineers coming in at 8.72 out of 10.
"In the multitude of customer satisfaction studies we have conducted for technology companies over the past thirteen years Riverbed's customers are among the most enthusiastic. The overall scores reported are some of the highest that we have seen," said Diane Hagglund, managing director for King Research. "Overall, Riverbed customers are thrilled with the performance, ease of deployment and management of Steelhead products as well as with the knowledge and responsiveness of the company's global services organization."
Purchase motivations: speed and cost savings
King Research surveyed the Riverbed customer base to determine their primary and secondary purchase motivations.
1. 51% of respondents selected applications and data acceleration
2. 48% of respondents selected Riverbed to dramatically reduce bandwidth costs
3. 33% of respondents selected Riverbed to consolidate and virtualize IT infrastructure and improve application performance
"We had been evaluating Cisco WAAS and were not happy with all the changes we needed to get it to work," said Riverbed customer and survey respondent Traci Pack, Stryker Instruments, a global leader in medical technology. "Riverbed Steelhead appliances took longer to rack than to get up and running. The Riverbed services team was very responsive and provided everything we needed. I don't think we could have had a better overall experience and business result."
Why Riverbed over the competition: More speed, simplicity and scale
The top three reasons that respondents chose Riverbed over the competition were:
1. Steelhead products deliver faster and better performance
2. Steelhead products are easier to deploy and manage and
3. Steelhead products offer broader support for application acceleration
Based on this, 87% of survey respondents said they would purchase Riverbed products again and recommend Riverbed to friends or colleagues.
Other considerations were pre-sales and support, range of features, scalability, product stability and the company's position as the WDS market leader. Sixty-three percent of customers surveyed said they selected Riverbed over competitors like Cisco WAAS and Juniper WX/WXC due to ease-of- deployment and management. Fifty-four percent of Riverbed customers surveyed also said that the need to accelerate the mobile workforce was an important factor in selecting Riverbed over the competition.
Applications Accelerated: More than anybody
The customers surveyed are accelerating the broadest range of applications with Riverbed Steelhead products. The top ten applications that customers are accelerating with Riverbed products are:
1. Windows File Sharing
2. Microsoft Exchange
3. Web-based applications (e.g., SharePoint, Web Front)
4. MS-SQL back-end applications
5. Custom applications
6. Client/server business applications (e.g., Oracle, SAP)
7. FTP
8. Backup/replication (e.g., SnapMirror, DPM, DoubleTake)
9. Thin client
10. CAD and document management (e.g., Interwoven, Documentum)
"Frequent customer feedback has been a key driver of our success and market leadership since we first shipped our products in 2004," said Eric Wolford, senior vice president of marketing and business development, Riverbed Technology. "We always know where we're going because our customers show us the way."
Steelhead Products Riverbed WDS solutions enable organizations of all sizes to overcome a host of severe problems, including poor application performance and insufficient bandwidth at remote sites. By speeding the performance of applications between data centers, remote offices and mobile workers by five to 50 times and in some cases up to 100 times, Riverbed's award-winning Steelhead WDS products enable companies to consolidate IT, improve backup and replication processes to ensure data integrity, and improve staff productivity and collaboration. Steelhead products have been deployed in organizations ranging from the world's largest corporations with offices around the globe to small companies with a couple of sites that are just miles apart. The Indian GAAP is presently based on IFRS with a full convergence with IFRS expected to happen in 2011. World's only Solar-Powered Compaction System Designed in SolidWorks Able to compact gallons of trash with a single gulp, BigBelly® Solar trash compactor cuts public garbage collection emissions by up to 80 percent
Bangalore, India, April 01, 2008
Eating its way to the forefront of the "green" movement, the BigBelly® trash bin designed in SolidWorks® 3D CAD software is the world's first and only on-site solar-powered trash compactor.
BigBelly is used in busy places around the world like shopping districts, food courts, and entertainment venues, or in remote places such as parks and beaches.
Standing at 50 inches tall and weighing 300 pounds, BigBelly uses only the sun's energy to compact and store five times the amount of garbage as receptacles of the same size. The machine uses up to 1, 250 pounds of force to compact trash periodically until it is full. Municipalities and city parks that formerly emptied garbage cans twice a day can now empty BigBelly once a week, reducing fuel costs and carbon emissions from garbage truck trips. Headquartered in Needham, Mass., the BigBelly Solar company standardized on SolidWorks software to optimize the unit's design and accelerate development to meet customer demand.
"Escalating steel prices forced us to rethink our approach to early development models", said Jeff Satwicz, BigBelly Solar product manager. "SolidWorks' sheet metal features along with simple load analyses in COSMOSXpress™ enabled us to re-design the machine with 30 percent fewer steel parts. That not only cut costs for a young startup company, but also jibed with our eco-friendly philosophy".
The unit, which stores energy even on cloudy days, can operate for a full day with the equivalent energy it requires to toast a slice of bread. It can operate for eight years on the equivalent energy it takes to drive a garbage truck one mile. These feats are possible in part because BigBelly Solar, its manufacturing partner, and their suppliers have good design communication.
Most of BigBelly Solar's suppliers use SolidWorks, and they share design concepts with eDrawings® e-mail-enabled design communication tool. eDrawings lets users send and receive 3D models or 2D drawings of product designs that recipients can view, rotate, and study as if they had a physical prototype in front of them. "It's important to have everyone speaking the same language. That helps us look at the big picture as well as the details", said Satwicz.
BigBelly Solar recently unveiled recycling units that connect to BigBelly or can stand alone, for customers who want to extend their environmentally friendly waste solutions. Designed in SolidWorks, the BigBelly Recycling Unit looks similar to the BigBelly, but offers an insertion hole for cans and bottles, mixed paper or both.
"The 'green' movement's success is measured in increments", said SolidWorks CEO Jeff Ray. "BigBelly is a great example of innovation in the face of a global problem. Its rapid adoption across the U.S. and in foreign countries demonstrates that we can find ways to reduce our impact on the environment - in this case, one BigBelly at a time".
BigBelly Solar relies on authorized SolidWorks reseller CADD Edge for ongoing software training, implementation, and support.
