No Stumbling Blocks out here...
Unit blocks may not be sophisticated as some toys we find in stores, but research has shown that they are ideal for learning because they involve the child as a whole - the way they move their muscles, the way they discover how different objects feel in their hands, the way they think about spaces and shapes and the way they develop thoughts. Infants and toddlers enjoy simply touching and gripping these blocks. They combine these blocks, stack them or line them up thus demonstrating their first attempts to build structures and show the beginnings of fantasy play.

Block playAt Stepping Stones the research findings of NAEYC are being implemented extensively. Block play encourages children to make friends and co-operate while playing in a group, developing team spirit. The act of picking up blocks, stacking them builds strength in their fingers, hands and increases eye-hand coordination. Children are quick learners with props such as blocks or puzzles. They begin to understand different perspectives, develop skills in design, representation, balance and stability. Blocks make children intelligent as they help in the learning of many academic subjects. They improve their vocabulary and math skills. Blocks offer children a chance to indulge in pretend-play as they make their own designs and end up with the satisfaction of having created a structure that did not exist before. Children value their own block structures whether or not they represent specific things. Rather than asking a child, "What did you make?" say, "Tell me about what you made." This will encourage a dialogue and offer the child new opportunities to explore.

Block play is open-ended and its possibilities are limitless. Even as children grow and develop new interests and abilities, blocks remain an active, creative learning tool. The school has a wide variety of blocks suitable for all ages from 2-6 years old.

Teacher! Teacher...
Talented TeachersThe hallmark at Stepping Stones will be quality teachers to take forward this program that is based on the recommendations and research findings by the US Department of Education. Important therefore, that not just any teacher would do at Stepping Stones. They will have personality and attitude and who will give their best, Monday through Friday, three hours each day. "Our teachers will be young, talented and energetic," says Seetha. "They will be team players, a partner and not just an assistant."

The teacher at Stepping Stones will be an all rounder. Citing hers as an example when she entered the teaching profession in the US, Seetha says, "I used to teach academics in a private school in the US but I had to do more than just that. I had to teach music, arts, crafts and drama too. Maybe not at a professional level, but I had the confidence and did everything." So, the teachers at Stepping Stones will have a major role to perform and not just read out "Baa-baa Black Sheep" as just a nursery rhyme. She'll have to enact it, sing it and create it into a drama production involving children.

And like Satish says, "We are not looking for mere qualifications. What we need is exceptional talent."
