Urinary Stones
You have heard a lot and wondered about stones. Here is all you want to know!
| This is how some stones really look!! |
 |
1.Where are Urinary Stones Formed?
Urinary Stones are commonly formed in the Kidneys and the Urinary Bladder
2.How are they formed?
Contrary to common belief, they have no relation to the stones we accidentally consume with the food grains. They are entirely formed from elements that are consumed by us in different forms or from elements that are manufactured (defectively) by the kidneys, which filter any excessive stone forming elements.
Similar to Salt forming by concentration of Sea Water (which is rich in Salt) concentrated Urine forms a correct recipe for stone formation. Thus a low concentration (or extreme dilution) of stone forming salts in the urine will not allow stone crystallization. In a similar way, very concentrated urine is a high risk for stone formation
3.How common are the Urinary Stones?
12 out of every 100 persons are at risk of forming Urinary Stones; Almost 40% of ALL urological problems are related to Kidney stones.
4.What are the common Ingredients of Stones?
Stones are formed of Positive Ions and negative Ions. Calcium, Magnesium and Ammonium are the common Positive Ions. These in combination with negative ions form the salt, which at the critical concentration, forms a crystal aggregate and forms a stone. The negative ions are Oxalate, Urate and Phosphate.
5.What is the relation of Infection to Stone formation?
Infection by some bacteria changes the Acid/Alkali equilibrium in the Urine and aggravates stone forming tendency. Stones in turn can act as a focus of infection and can cause infection due to obstruction and inflammation or irritation of the urinary tract
6.What are the common symptoms?
Pain! This occurs at the Most inopportune moments (usually early morning) and is one of the most severe intensity (as bad as labor pains!!) usually over the back or lower abdomen.
Vomiting Usually accompanies severe pain
Fever Usually indicates Infection ... Seek medical attention!
Blood in urine Do not be Alarmed, this indicates a mild trauma due to the stone
Blockage of urine This may occur in the urinary bladder or in the pipes from the Kidneys to the urinary bladder. This is usually an emergency condition... Seek medical help
