Medical Treatment of BPH
What Medical treatments are available?
There are broadly 3 groups of drugs:
- Alpha Blockers, which are blood pressure reducing drugs which work by relaxing the smooth muscles in the blood vessel walls and also the smooth muscles in the prostate.
- Alpha Reductase Inhibitors, Which stop conversion of the male hormone Testosterone into an active drug which causes continued enlargement(not malignant) of prostate.
- Phyto (plant Alkaloids) Drugs. These work by a principle based on Aromatase which is an element present in the plant alkaloids which block the sequences of events in the cell growth and multiplication of prostate cells by inhibition of selective Growth Factors.
Which Drugs will suit me?
This is something only your Urologist (Not even your Family Physician) can decide Scientifically. The decision depends on the size and shape of your gland and what stage is your prostate enlargement is when you present to your doctor.
It is totally inadvisable to go onto medical therapy before a complete work up as it is possible to miss Complications, Cancer and miss out the opportunity for early treatment.
Avoid buying over the counter prescriptions for Prostate enlargement as serious diseases may be masked by these treatment.
